Medication and falls

As we age it becomes more likely that we will need to take medicine. Sometimes this will be short-term - for an infection or to cope with a pain. Sometimes it will be long-term - to manage a chronic problem such as high blood pressure, mental illness or diabetes. Often people are prescribed different medication for several different problems in the same period of time.

Taking four or more different types of prescribed medication is a very strong risk of falling.

The following types of medication may increase the likelihood of a fall:

  • Medication to treat anxiety, depression, sleeping problems and antipsychotics;
  • Blood pressure lowering drugs.

If you think the drugs you are taking are making a fall more likely, let your doctor know.

Do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor (GP)
