Why falls occur

What to do if you get one of the symptoms:

  1. Stop what you are doing.
  2. Sit down, if possible lie down and raise your legs above your hips.
  3. Drink some water.

If you frequently feel dizzy you should talk to your doctor about it. he or she will carry out some tests and review your medication. Only in severe cases you will be prescribed some medication for it.

How to control postural hypotension:

  • Sleep with your head up at night to minimise the drop in blood pressure when you get out of bed;
  • Sit for a minute or two in the bed before standing up; stand for a minute or two before walking;
  • Squeeze your calf muscles and clench your fists before and while standing to raise the blood pressure;
  • Do simple but regular exercise to keep the blood flow moving (e.g. 'marching' on the spot);
  • Drink enough water ( 3 1/2 pints/ 2 litres a day);
  • Eat small, regular snacks during the day; avoid sugary food and drinks; this is to avoid a drop in blood pressure after meals which can occur in some old people and cause dizziness, falls and fainting.
  • Have a warm shower instead of a hot bath;
  • Have frequent rests to avoid exhaustion.
