Bunion
Symptoms: A 'bunion' is a prominent bump on the inner side of the foot, where the great toe joins the foot. The toe joints can become swollen and tender, causing the first joint of the big toe to slant outward and the toe itself to angle toward the other toes. Bunions can have different degrees of appearances and tend to worsen over time. The condition can become very painful leading to skin problems (e.g. corns).
Causes: Bunions are very common and are caused by a misalignment of the toe joint, which leads to the deviation of the toe towards the inside. The condition tends to run in families. Unstable flat feet seem especially prone to bunions. However, bunions can also be a result of wearing shoes that are too tight in the forefoot and toe.
Treatment: Wearing sandals or special pads may help to relieve the pain. Applying ice to the feet helps reduce the pain and swelling. Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs or steroid injections. In severe cases, surgery is often recommended to correct the problem.
