Foot problems and footwear
The human foot is a complex structure made of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, nerves and skin. These parts all work together to provide the body with support, balance and mobility. When walking and running the foot is able to sustain enormous pressure and provides flexibility and resilience. The ankle serves as a foundation, shock absorber and propulsion engine.
The appearance of our feet changes over time and as we grow older, feet can develop more problems. Dry skin, brittle and ingrown toenails, and toe deformities can cause discomfort and pain. Over 80% of older people have one or more foot problems. Having problems with your feet can affect the way you walk and how steady you are on your feet and therefore may increase the risk of falling. Taking good care of your feet and wearing properly fitted shoes is essential. Only healthy feet can help you to stay mobile and help to keep your independance.
