Osteoporosis - prevention and treatment

The prevention of osteoporosis aims to increase bone density. The following may help prevent osteoporosis:

  • Follow a well-balanced, 'bone-friendly' diet with a variety of minerals and vitamins from different food groups;
  • Increase intake of calcium and Vitamin D in your diet;
  • Regular weight-bearing exercise (note: swimming is not a weight-bearing exercise);
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink;
  • Stop smoking.

There are a number of treatments available for people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis.

The most common are:

  • Non-hormonal drugs for maintaining the density of the bones and reducing the risk of fractures;
  • Calcium and vitamin D supplements;
  • Regular weight-bearing exercise (note: swimming is not a weight bearing exercise);
  • Hormone replacement therapies.
