Osteoporosis - who is at risk

Although everybody is potentially at risk of osteoporosis, women are four times more likely to be affected by this condition. One in three women and one in twelve men will develop osteoporosis over the age of 50.

Women are at risk when they lack the female hormone oestrogen. This can be caused by:

The risk for women and men is increased by:

  • A family history of osteoporosis;
  • A long term usage of steroids (e.g. for Rheumatoid arthritis and asthma);
  • Medical conditions like hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormones), chronic liver disease, malabsorption etc.;
  • Long term immobility or inactive lifestyle;
  • Smoking and heavy drinking;
  • A low body weight.
