What happens during Physiotherapy?

1. The initial assessment

First the therapist will gather some information about you and will carry out a series of tests to assess:

  • Muscle strength.
  • Range of movement.
  • Mobility.
  • Transfers (e.g. getting up out of a chair)
  • Balance.
  • Functional ability (e.g. reaching and bending

After this assessment, the physiotherapist will then prepare with you a programme for the therapy, with a set of goals based on everyday activities.

2. The therapy programme

The therapy takes place in a group or on a one-to-one bases and may be based on a set of exercises, which help to:

  • Strengthen muscle groups and improve stamina, strength and balance.
  • Stretch muscles and improve suppleness and range of motion.
  • Transfer from a wheelchair to a bed, or walking with support

3. The completion of the therapy

The therapy finishes when you have achieved your goals and reached your potential. If there are any concerns about your ongoing physical abilities, you will be offered follow-up support.
