A well balanced diet

Fibre

Fibre is found in fruit and vegetables, starchy foods and beans or pulses. Fibre can help us feel full so we are less likely to snack between meals - this can be useful if you are trying to lose weight. It can also help to keep your bowels healthy, prevent constipation and may help reduce cholesterol levels.

There are two types of fibre:

  • Insoluble fibre
  • Soluble fibre

Insoluble fibre is found in a variety of foods including wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, high fibre breakfast cereals (e.g. bran flakes, wheat biscuits). This type of fibre is particularly good for the bowels and can help keep you regular. It is important to drink plenty of fluids as well as this type of fibre absorbs fluid.

Soluble fibre is found in fruit and vegetables, beans and pulses, porridge oats and granary bread. It is also important in keeping your bowels healthy but may also help lower cholesterol.

Try gradually incorporating more high fibre foods into your diet.
