A well balanced diet

Fluids

Drinking plenty of water can also benefit health, protecting the heart, digestive system and kidneys. We lose water though our skin, by breathing and by going to the toilet so we have to constantly replace it.

Because older people often don't feel as thirsty as younger persons, they are at increased risk of becoming dehydrated. We can tell if we are well hydrated by looking at our urine - it should be a pale straw colour.

The British Dietetic Association guidelines advise us to take in 2.5. litres of water per day of which 1.8 litres (i.e. 6-7 glassess of water) should directly come from beverages, and more if it is hot or after exercise.

Please note: Coffee, tea and alcoholic drinks do not count towards the recommended amount of fluid, as they make you go more often to the toilet.
