A well balanced diet

Fruit & vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. It is recommended that we eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

This includes all types of fruit and vegetables be it; fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or in the form of juice. If you are not already having five portions, try increasing your current intake by one portion each day.

What is a portion?

  • 1 medium fruit e.g. apple. orange, banana
  • 2 small fruit e.g plum, kiwi
  • 1 large slice of melon, pineapple
  • 1/2 grapefruit
  • 1 cupful grapes or berries
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh fruit salad, stewed or canned fruit
  • 1/2 - 1 tablespoon of dried fruit
  • 2 tablespoons of cooked, raw, canned or frozen vegetables
  • 1 dessert bowl of salad
  • 1 glass of fruit juice
