Walking sticks and crutches

A good walking stick is light, height-adjustable and has a firm grip. The handle should be shaped ergonomically for extra comfort, the tip of the handle should be shaped to be rested over the arm, leaving both hands free when, for example, shopping.

Crutches offer an even better support than a walking stick. Good crutches are fitted with a shaped handle to fit in the palm of a hand comfortably and open elbow cuff.

It is very important to have the walking stick at the correct height; otherwise it will not give you enough support. The correct length of a walking stick can be taken by measuring the distance between the wrist bone and the ground (when standing upright in regular shoes with your hands by your sides). The same guidelines apply to crutches; their length should be adjustable according to your height.
