Coping with a small appetite

If you have a poor appetite and are losing weight significantly consult your doctor and you may need investigations to find out the cause. It may not be appropriate for you to follow a healthy diet, instead you need high energy foods.

In these circumstances, you will be encouraged to choose high energy food and drinks, that may be high in fat and sugar. The aim is to help you regain your appetite, prevent further weight loss or promote weight gain.

Some tips to help you overcome a reduced appetite.

  • Have small meals with extra snacks in-between
  • Choose nourishing foods and drink instead of low fat healthier options
  • Try to have meals that you enjoy
  • Try to drink extra milk - if possible aim for 1 pint per day
  • Fortify your foods by adding extra milk powder, sugar, butter and cream to them where possible.
