Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is a disease that reduces sight in a very dramatic way: by damaging the central retina with the macula of the eye it has an affect on the central vision. It is increasingly common with age. The vision loss occurs gradually and typically affects both eyes at different rates. Although the loss of central vision does not result in complete blindness, people with macular degeneration find it difficult to read, drive and perform other daily tasks.

The root causes of macular degeneration are still unknown. Although there is no medical treatment available, glasses can help to improve the vision in some cases.

There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry.
