Risks outdoors
In public places most falls, trips and slips occur due to the very poor condition of the surfaces of roads, footpaths and steps. Be aware of uneven, cracked or slippery footpaths and loose stones and slabs, especially in badly lit areas. Kerbs and a dent in the footpath can easily become traps when crossing the road in a hurry or running after that bus.
Ice and snow are also important risk factors. Every winter many older people are admitted to hospital because they have fallen on an icy or snowy pavement.
Although uneven or icy pavements seem to be out of your control, you can reduce the risk of falling by being careful when going out. Leave yourself plenty of time and do not hurry. Always look where you are going. Wear sensible footwear and consider using a walking stick for extra support. Cross streets at proper pedestrian crossing with dropped kerbs and traffic lights controlling the traffic flow. If you feel scared by or uncomfortable in large crowds, don't go out during the rush hours.
