Rehabilitation

The term rehabilitation describes the process of restoring your physical and mental functions to the maximum with the aim of gaining as much independence as possible. The therapy can include specific exercises to improve mobility, learning new, safer ways to carry out everyday activities and advice on how to use walking aids, grab rails and other assistive devices. Research has shown that older people with for example hip fractures or other falls-related injuries, benefit from their rehabilitation programme.

If you take part in a rehabilitation programme, you are very likely to come in touch with a number of health professionals with different backgrounds and skills, such as doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers.

In the following sections you will be able to read about occupational therapy and physiotherapy - why you may receive them, where they take place and what happens during the therapy sessions.
