What happens during OT?

1. The initial assessment

Usually the occupational therapy begins by gathering information about the person by asking questions or watching them doing their usual daily activities. The therapist finds out what the person can do for themselves and whether any changes need to happen in the home to make things easier.

Based on a description of your abilities, needs and urgency of your case, the therapist will then prepare with you a programme of therapy with a set of goals based on your abilities and needs.

2. The therapy programme

Occupational therapists work with people in different ways. They might demonstrate a new technique to carry out a particular activity - eg climbing stairs or getting in and out of the bath. They also have a role in bringing together groups of patients in similar situations.

Occupational therapists also carry out home visits, where they give you advice on home alterations that may help to achieve your independence.
