Watch out what you do
- First and most important: take fewer risks in your daily routine.
- When getting out of bed - first raise the head with a wedge pillow, then sit up for a minute or two before you stand up, clench your fists and squeeze calf muscles a couple of times while you stand up before you walk. This will avoid a drop in blood pressure and dizziness. Make sure you move slowly and in stages and tense the arm and leg muscles a few times between each stage.
- When bending over, place your feet well apart and bend from the knees. Hold on to something sturdy.
- When turning around, avoid turning quickly; take a few separate steps and do not swivel.

- If you have pets, be aware of where they are, so you can keep them out from under your feet.
- Do not climb up chairs or a ladder if it makes you feel unsteady. Do not use a chair or another piece of furniture when doing high jobs. Use a broad based, sturdy ladder with handrails instead and have someone with you. Consider asking someone else to high jobs for you.
- Have someone visit or phone you regularly in case you have fallen or need assistance.
- It is a good idea to have a blanket and some cushions stored in your living area to keep warm in case you fall.
