Stop smoking

Smoking causes about 80% of all deaths from lung cancer. It also causes serious disability and death from chronic bronchitis, heart disease and circulation problems leading to amputation of limbs. These are only a few examples of what damage to our health smoking can cause.

In addition to these well-known side effects of active and passive smoking it is also likely to increase osteoporosis related fractures. l6% of people over 60 smoke. Studies have shown that there is a strong link between smoking, bone density and the risk of hip fractures in old age.

We know it is not easy to give up smoking. But even at an old age it's still worthwhile to stop smoking. Giving up smoking is a process that requires preparation, determination and support.

There are various ways to give up the habit and several support tools available (e.g. acupuncture, nicotine replacements). Speak to your GP or get in touch with the NHS help lines to find out more.
