The eye test
Having problems with your eyesight is not a normal part of getting older. Many eye conditions can be controlled or cured if they are detected and treated early. A lot of older people lose their sight simply because they do not seek the help of an eye care specialist.
It is recommended that everybody should have an eye test every two years. Older people and diabetics should have their eyes checked once a year. The eye care specialist (optometrist, opthamologist or optician) will not only test your vision, they also carry out the essential health check for your eyes.
The NHS eye test is free of charge to everybody aged 60 and over. People on a low income or those who require strong lenses can get vouchers to help them pay for their glasses.
