Reduce alcohol

Drinking more alcohol than recommended can damage your health and increases the risk of falling. Be aware of the sensible and safe limits. This means:

Men should drink no more that 21 units per week (and no more than 4 units in any one day)

Women should drink no more that 14 units per week (and no more than 3 units in any one day)

Have at least 2 alcohol-free days in each week.

A unit of alcohol is 10ml (1cl) of pure alcohol. This is equal to:

  • A half pint of normal strength beer, cider or lager.
  • A pub measure of spirits (25ml) or of fortified wine such as sherry (50ml)
  • A small glass (125ml) of wine containing 8% alcohol by volume.

Note this is only a rough guide. Many beers and wines these days are stronger than they used to be and wine is often served in larger glasses.

Sometimes even one drink is too much. Don't drink if you are on medication, driving or planning to drive, or are at work or about to go to work.
