Consequences of falls
Falls are one of the most common and serious problems faced by older people. The rate of falls increase steadily after the age of 60. Although children fall more often the consequences of falls are more serious in older persons because of frailty, inability to get up and underlying bone disease e.g. osteoporosis. A relatively minor fall may result in a serious injury like a hip fracture.
Falling is often a very frightening experience and the outcomes range from physical injury, disability, dependence and more serious consequences. About 5 to 10% of falls in old people result in significant injuries and some of these require hospital treatment.
But falls can also have long-term physiological and social consequences. Many older people are worried about falling again and lose their confidence to go out and carry out their daily tasks.
