Sprains

A sprain is a simple stretch or tear of the ligaments - the strong bands of tissue that connect one bone to another. They help to stabilise joints, preventing excessive movement. Sprains are frequently caused by a rapid, abrupt movement of the joint or when you land awkwardly after a fall. Your knees, ankles and wrists are very vulnerable to sprains and ankle sprains especially are very common. Wrist sprains can occur when you fall forward on your outstretched hand.

Sprains can vary in severity and the symptoms depend on how much the ligaments are torn or stretched. In mild cases the ligaments are stretched but not torn. Although it's tender, you might be still able to move the joint. In severe cases the ligaments tear completely, the joint becomes swollen, discoloured and very painful.

If the area around your joint is very tender and you cannot put any weight on the joint or move you should see your doctor.
